Babbling Developmental Stage 1: tool-centered tool use method, 2018, 7 channel video installation and live performance
Technologies, tools and machines, are made to assist and extend human activities. multi channel video installation, Babbling Developmental Stage 1, reverses the relationship between human and tools by “using tools in a tool-centric way” instead of a “human-centric way”.
In the installation, the monitors are respectively attached to the tools that are performed in the videos. In This way, the audience are required to corrospond with the movement of the tools in order to watch the video played in the monitor. For instance, you have to follow the robot vacuum to see the “robot vacuum video”, you have to move left and right and face the wind to watch the “fan video”, and crawl down to see the inside of the dustpan to watch the “broom video”. The actions required to watch the video are intended to encourage the user to experience the labor of a human user performing a “tool-centered tool use method,” as shown in the video.
