 As a Korean who immigrated to the United States, I kept on visiting the idea of “borrowing” - standing on a borrowed land that I am not from, borrowing the culture to explain myself, and borrowing a language that is not mine. Thinking of how to transform this idea with materials, I began to think of a light that cannot glow by itself but glows by borrowing from another light source. The second-hand lamps inside the installation are covered with the UV reactive substances that you can find in domestic space such as paraffin wax, detergent, toothpaste, turmeric, fish oil, and olive oil. These lamps are not connected to electric power and only glow by reacting with the UV blacklight that are placed around them.

미국으로 이민 온 한국인으로서 나는 계속해서 "빌려오기"라는 개념에 대해 생각한다. 내가 태어난 곳이 아닌 빌린 땅에서, 빌린 언어와 문화를 빌려 나를 설명하는 것. 이 빌린다는 개념을 어떻게 재료로 변환할지 고민하면서, 스스로 빛날 수 없지만 다른 광원에서 빌려서 빛나는 빛을 생각하기 시작했다. 설치된 중고램프들은 파라핀 왁스, 세제, 치약, 강황, 생선 기름, 올리브 오일과 같이 가정에서 찾을 수 있는 UV 반응성 물질로 뒤덮여 있다. 이 램프들은 연결된 전기의 동력 없이, 주변에서 발광하고 있는 UV 블랙라이트를 반사하여 빛을 낸다.

Interviews from the immigrants whose native language was/is not English are playing in the dark room. The audio starts asking the interviewee about the words that are not translatable in English in their language and is followed by the stories of their relationship with English in the United States.

모국어가 영어가 아니었거나 혹은 영어가 아직도 아닌 이민자들의 인터뷰 음성이 어두운 방에서 재생되고 있다. 음성 인터뷰에서는, 인터뷰이들에게 본인의 모국어 중 영어로 번역할 수 없는 단어에 대해 묻는 것으로 시작해 인터뷰이와 영어라는 언어와의 관계에 대한 그들의 경험과 이야기로 이어진다.

Khatibi’s Love in Two Languages, 2022, Acrylic plexiglass, paraffin wax, detergent, fish oil, blacklight, 170cm x 60cm 

An English sentence from Abdelkebir Khatibi’s book “Love for Two Languages” was translated into Korean using Google Translate. This Korean sentence was engraved on acrylic plexiglass and then the text was filled with substances (paraffin wax, detergent, fish oil, etc.) that reflect and glow under a black light. The sentence written with these substances becomes visible only at night under a black light.

카티비의 두 개의 언어에 대한 사랑, 2022, 아크릴, 파라핀 왁스, 세재, 피쉬오일, 블랙라이트, 154 cm x 60cm 

압델키비 카티비(Abdelkebir Khatibi)의 저서 “두개의 언어에 대한 사랑”에서 발췌한 영어 문장을 구글 번역기에서 한글로 번역하였다. 한글 문장을 아크릴 플랙시글라스에 음각으로 새긴 후 블랙라이트에 반사되어 발광하는 물질들(파라핀 왁스, 세재, 피쉬오일 등) 로 글씨 부분을 채워넣었다. 이 물질들로 쓰여진 문장은 블랙라이트에 의해 밤에만 가시화된다.
