The Vertical Line Test

THE VERTICAL LINE TEST, live performance, 2023, santa monica california

(THE VERTICAL LINE TEST IS AN INVITED PERFORMANCE FOR THE LIVE PERFORMANCE EVENT, SWEPT AWAY: LOVE LETTER TO A SURROGATE, ORGANIZED BY WARREN NEIDICH, RENÉE PETROPOULOS, AND ANURADHA VIKRAM. PRESENTED BY 18TH STREET ARTS CENTER WITH SUPPORT FROM THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA ART OF RECOVERY PROGRAM AND THE ANNENBERG COMMUNITY BEACH HOUSE.)

I AM the variable “X” AND YOU ARE the variable “Y”. IF I AM UNDER THE X AXIS AND YOU ARE ABOVE THE X AXIS, CAN WE BE A FUNCTION? IF I AM HERE AT THE Y AXIS AND IF YOU ARE THERE AT THE X AXIS, CAN US BE A FUNCTION?

FUNCTION, IN MATHEMATICS, IS rule THAT DEFINES A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ONE VARIABLE (THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE) AND ANOTHER VARIABLE (THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE). THE VERTICAL LINE TEST IS A METHOD THAT IS USED TO DETERMINE WHETHER A GIVEN RELATION IS A FUNCTION OR NOT.

According to Sarah Ahmad, “migrant orientation” is facing two different directions: toward a home that has been away, and toward a place that is not yet home. A singular Body always move towards two different directions. the variable X moves toward the plus value, but also toward the minus value at the same time.

The direction of a migrant cannot be set to a single coordinate.

IF, the variable x moves toward plus value but also toward the minus value, if the x here but also there—- if the x is a fluid body—- Couldn't X be the same as Y? If the variable X is me and the variable Y is you, is the boundary between us clear?

Performance, the vertical line test, poetically interprets the equation of the function graph to navigate a coordianate of immigrants’ fragmented identity and asks if the impossibility of a singular location can expand into the possibility of breaking down the boundary between me and you.

(Digging)

Dear Bastienne,

You told me about Ariadne’s red thread. in Greek Mythology.

Theseus unrolled the ball of red thread as he passes the maze, which allowed him to find his way back out.

What if the maze implies our own selves?

What if the prenotion of an autonomous self has created the maze that captures ourselves, And howhowhow can we find the way out?

FLOOD < FADE < FLOAT < FLOW < FEAR < FLEE < FREE < FOOD < SEA < SAVE

(Stick the umbrella next to the whole,

Tie the end of the thread on the middle of the umbrella)

IF (if if if)

the red thread is a map, a graph of a function, then how can I locate you and me?

(Hold the other mirror circle and give to another person)

I, I, I,  am water. the variable “ X”

You, you are the other variable “ Y”.

Y is a function of X

Y and X is interchangeable

(Crouch inside the hole. Hold the umbrella on top of the head)

Vertical Line Test is a method to determine whether a given relation is a function or not.

IF

I am at the end of the y-axis and you are at the end of the x-axis, can we become a function?

IF

I reflect over x-axis, Thus, I am UNDER the x axis but also ABOVE the x axis, which means, you are also under the x axis and above the x axis, can we become a function?

IF

I am ABOVE and UNDER and LEFT and RIGHT at the same time as you—, can we become a function?

HOW do we enable our own “becoming - other” (Elizabeth Grosz)

FLOOD < FADE < FLOAT < FLOW < FEAR < FLEE < FREE < FOOD < SEA < SAVE

(Crouch outside from the hole. Place the umbrella horizontally leaning on the rack.

Bring back the circle mirror from the other person and put it down.

Put down the amplifier on top of the mirroR. Stick the trash bin rack inside the hole.

Grab a bucket and fill out the sand and walk to the ocean)

Astrida Neimanis, Bodies of Water

We, are, bodies of water

We comprise water, we leak spill drain stream and seethe. Our borders are vulnerable to rupture and renegotiate.

The flow and flush of water sustain our own bodies, but also connect them to other bodies.

body, to body, to body.

Water is directed towards the becoming of other bodies.

Our own embodiment is never really autonomous.

When “y is a function of x.”

Y and X are interchangeable.

We are both different

and in common

Dear Bastienne,

According to Sarah Ahmad, “migrant orientation” is facing two different directions: toward a home that has been away, and toward a place that is not yet home. Body, the variable X move towards the plus value, but also move towards the minus value . This malfunction of a function, the error, the crack occurs in the body.

What if what if what if

The malfunction of a function, the crack of the singular body creates a place where i am you at the same time?

What if what if what if

This crack this gap this error, is a way that we can find ourselves out?

You say, “The red thread pulls us which will lead to a million different dead ends, BUT we will find a place.”

FLOOD < FADE < FLOAT < FLOW < FEAR < FLEE < FREE < FOOD < SEA <SAVE

You say I say you say, “We will find a place.”

I say I say you say, “we will find a place.”
